a 2NT (strong against the expected diamond preempt) as well against 2M opener, we playFeature Ask, not classic Ogust
Used abbreviations and definitions:
HCP High card points - with devaluation of doubleton and singleton honors unless NoTrump and not in any known OpFor suit DP Distribution points. Doubleon +1, Singleton +2, void +3. With a known fit, +1/+3/+5 M major suits m minor suits BAL Balanced distribution, including 5332 with long minor (exceptionally 6322 or 7222, if the side suits are well stopped). Also 5422 in some cases. (i.e. with 15 HCP and 4 in major) NF Non-forcing bid F Forcing for one round. Some of these bids can actually be passed, if made by a passed hand and promising a major suit. GF Forcing to game (3NT, 4M) or to 4m. CB Cue bud. When we have a suit fit, promises stopper of 1st or 2nd round (below game bid) or 1st round (above game bid). BW Blackwood shortened, aces and kings (14 / 30 / 2+14 / 2+30 / 2+2) RKCB Roman Keycard Blackwood shortened, 4 aces and trump king and trump queen. ( 14 / 30 / 2 - Q / 2 + Q ) A A bid that must be alerted 2/1 A non-jump bid in a new suit on 2nd level. Without interference, it is by definitionGF or a good 6card (9-11 HCP) 1/1 A new suit on 1st level Tophonor A, K or Q game try bid With agreed trump suit on 2nd level, a new suit bid is invitation, seeking help in this suit. If the responser has a top-honor in this suit or a very good hand, he bids game. Should be used with 3+card and 1+ tophonor (but there are cases when you need to bid with Qx). 4432 Any hand with two 4cards and one doubleton 5-3-2-3 Any hand with exactly 5

, 2
a 3
GSF If we don't have an agreed suit, a jump to 5NT is forcing to 6NT and invitation to 7NT. If we have an agreed suit and we used cue-bids and did not use 4NT RKCB, 5NT (even non-jump) is GSF, asking how many trump honors partner has (answers 0,1,2,3). STOP A bid that strongly expects partner to pass. P/C Pass or correct - a bid that expects partner to pass or choose a better contract. (typically 3NT vs. 4M or looking for a conventionally shown suit of partner). Axx An ace with two spot cards. 8 is the highest spotcard, but in VINJE leads a lead of 8 promises the 9. LTC Loser trick count. My rules for counting: Max 3LTC per suit, Max 2LTC in 8-9 card suit, max 1 in 10+card. Axx = 2, AQx = 1.5, Kxx = 0.5. (Note that this system uses LTC only for stronger hands - and for these, it pays to count losers strictly. The stronger you are, the fewer entries your partner will have and the fewer finesses you will be able to play. A hand with AQ AQ AQ AKQJxxx has almost certainly 3 losers :-) 321 Rule for defining how many tricks below the bid a preempt promises. In fact, we play 5332 at MPs and 4332 at IMPs. (Numbers stand for 1#2, 1#1, 2#2, 2#1 game state)
General rules and system approach:

is GF but can still mean 4card - so 2
response from opener is natural.
-kontra-pass-4NT says "pick a minor, I don't have spades".
-2
-3
is still inverted. In this case, it should me more competitive than preempt, but still denies 9+ HCP.

Honor leads VINJE:
We lead 1st from 1-2, 3rd from 3-4, 5th from 5, 4th from 6, 7th from 7, 6th from 8 etc.
We lead 3rd even from empty 3cards.

attitude, then count
odd is positive (but high odd followed by low odd cancels the signal), even is suit preference
Three possibilities: a) suit preference b) trump count c) absolute signal.
If partner tries to give you a ruff, signal trump count so that he will know whether you can ruff or not
Otherwise, use suit preference, unless you agree on the absolute signal
13 cards can be divided as 3 odd counts and one even OR 3 even counts and one odd (5332 vs 4432 as example) - trump signal of low-high shows that your hand is of the odd type.
signal count IF you think it will help your partner.
Lead 4th best, 1st from doubleton, middle-up-down from 3cards. Subsequent leads may show attituse (low from honor, high from empty suit) unless you want partner to get the count right.
Lead higher from any two touching honors. (J is from J10 or KJ10 or AJ10).
Signal attitude as low encouraging (the higher spot cards may be needed later)
Signal count as low = odd, even = high (hint, number of letters in the word)
Discards classic suit preference

Bidding when opponents open
Over 1 of a suit
After opponents open with preempt
If RHO speaks, the responder is given extra room. His forced bid range has been now halved. Follow this guideline: The length of your two best suits (not bid by opponents) AND your total HCP is over 12, bid freely.
(Example: 1
-x-p-1
3card is enough, 1
-x-p-2
should be 4card. If I don't have a 4card and can't bid 1NT, bid 2
if I have 33 in minors.
After this forced bid, a new suit by the doubling hand shows 17+, but is not stricly forcing - use CB if you want to bid game on your own. When the doubling hand bid the takeout double TWICE, a new suit IS forcing.
-x-1
-2
would come with as little as xxx-x-Kxxxx-Jxxx. With 6+HCP and this shape, double 1
. With 9+HCP jump, but only if you're interested in your suit only.)
Natural NT

Polish NT
1NT (A) Polish NT - promises minor 5card and major 4card (in unbid suits) with the regular overcall strength, maybe a little better lower limit. Played over natural or seminatural openings and on Polish club (where it is totally ambiguous):
Responses:
Over weak NT (range does not include 16)
- 13+ DP, up to 3
- 15+ DP, up to 4
- 17+ DP. Over opponents weak two and partner's double, we employ 2NT Lebensohl (as if partner opened with 1NT and opps overcalled), see below.
Cappelletti (Alert all except double). 9-13 HCP. (The better shape, the less points you need, approx 1pt. per extra card). Played in reopen seat as well!
Over strong NT (includes 16 or more)
- any 6card (2
P/C, rest nat NF, 2NT F)
- at least 44 in majors
- at least 5 hearts and 4 minor (can be played as 45 as well, but this is hard on nerves)
- at least 5 spades and 4 minor
DONT(Alert all). 10-17 HCP (Add 1 HCP for extra length in suit, add 2 HCP for good vul.). Reopen only with constructive intent.
P/C, other suits nat.) Can be exceptionally passed with a good hand that gives a chance to run partner's 6carder. (Ideally 4333 with good points as they will be under tenaces.)

overcall negative (6+HCP +2 per overcall level, promises 4cards in unbid majors (unless it contains 11-12HCP with penalty double, which would put us into NT contract as soon as opener starts looking for the promised majors. Exception: 1m-1
-x denies spades. 1

Similar mechanism is used against opps. weak twos - 3rd level directly is F, 2nd level directyl is weak, 3rd level through LEB is invit/NF.

Exceptions:
If opps double our 1NT opening conventionally, immediate rdbl is for business. (I don't care what we could make, I want to double any contract they try.)
If opps double our 1NT opening for penalties, immediate rdbl shows 6+HCP, pass denies 5card and 6HCP any suit bid is 5card. If partner wants to run against a pass, he bids 5card or redbls (asking me for lowest 4card).
If opps overcall 2
, double is Stayman and all systems on, we do NOT employ Lebensohl.
If opps overcall with artifical bid (2
and higher) that promises the bid suit (and something else), we employ Lebensohl.
If opps overcall with artifical bid that does not promise the bid suit and guarantees that the bidding does not stop, we use double to show invitation in the artifically bid suit. Penalty double will be used when the real opponents suit is bid.

4card, denies 3 hearts. 3NT from responder shows 5 hearts and is to play
-2NT-3
(responder must have 5 spades and may have 4 hearts
4card, does not deny 3 spades. Can then safely correct 3NT to 4
, because responder would not bid gameforce without 5
.
3card, denies 4hearts
may be also used for any slam-headed hands. Make an agreement with partner on how to bid hands that don't have the extra major shape and are,
for example, interested in minor suits. One possible treatment would be that any 3NT bid over the response to 3
was interested in the majors only - while 4
bid here would show general slam interest afterwards.
Another possibility is to live without Gerber and keep 1x-1y-2NT-4
as a slam try with no extra interest in the major(s).
-2NT-3
should show a weakish hand with 5-4-x-x. These hands often make a response based on the length of majors, with as little as 3-4 HCP.
This is why the 5-4 shape is covered in one of the above variants and it should be bid via 3
if gameforce.
After sequences 1M-(p)-2M, 1M-x-1NT, 1m-(p)-1M-(p)-2M we use gametries based on help-suits or short suits:
Natural game tries
, 2
] after
) (A) asks for helpsuit, responder shows cheapest suit in which he would go to game. (Can be used with very strong hands as cuebid).
,
(A) game-try with shortness. If responder has no bad values in this suit, he should bid game. (Can be used with very strong hands as cuebid).
after
, 2NT after
(A) - fourcard in other major, game try.
After sequences 1M-(p)-2M, 1M-x-1NT, 1m-(p)-1M-(p)-2M we use gametries based on help-suits:

GF
Since partner has already shown six hearts, it is unlikely he would be interested in a better partscore in spades. Therefore, 2
in this case will be totally artifical GF.
Weak hand with spades is bid by 2
directly, invit with 6+ spades via 1
and then 3
. If we dont have a nice 5card minor to use as forcing, we use artifical 2
.
Opener will describe his hand in transfers. Game bids of responder are to play, rest described below:

Limit raises when partner opens 1M in 3rd/4th seat. This allows lighter openers safely. Raise to 2M is natural, but limit raises are shown via 2
and 2
(3card and 4card support, respectively. Responses to 2
:
After 2
- a regular opener, denies balanced hand, asks partner to explore game tries.
- a weak opener (if I opened 1
, shows 5+4+-x-x)
- after 1
opener, shows weak variant. After 1
opener, shows slam try with 4card.
, the only difference is merging balanced and unbalanced regular openers into the 2NT rebid.
TWRD can be applied over doubles and any overcall that does not steal the bid. Suggested treatment: after 2
overcall, use double and 2
for Drury. After 2
overcall, use double for either variant. After any higher overcall, bid naturally.
Structured reverse - Lebensohl in offense
Lebensohl po after opener's reverse, also called structured reverse. Example: 1

The auction should be similar in all possible reverse cases. There are a few general rules:
- exactly 5card, 6-8HCP. Tells partner to expect no cooperation, typically with empty 3-4card in the unbid suit and 2-2 in opener's suits.
. (Opener may refuse to bid 3
, showing GF against minimum). Following responder's rebids:
A weak hand with long other minor. Not very frequent.

opener:
We play shortest/longest overcall (Applies only to the 2nd hand, immediately after the strong opener!)
In response to any 1stlevel bid, bid a new 4card suit IF you have 3+support for the suit of the overcall. This should guarantee that your side has at least 7card fit either in the overcaller's suit or in the responder's suit. Furthermore, the overcaller will know this while noone else knows :)
The only strong bid is 2NT, to which overcaller responds by repeating his suit (if it was longest) or bidding lowest 4card (if it was shortest) - both in order with 0-7 HCP and jumping with 8-10.
